I tell people all the time that they should keep a journal, even if it's just, 'I had a terrible day today and I don't want to talk about it, love Stevie,' or 'I dreamt last night...' Even if it's just three sentences because at the end of five or six days, you would have created a habit and you will find that over a month that you have a whole story growing. Whether it's just for your own memories, so you can go back at any age, or if you are a writer or a singer, or some part of the creative business. You can be creative ~ anyone can be creative if they want to ~ you just have to want to.
Stevie's been keeping journals forever, you hear her talk about them from as far back as Rumours. As she says above, she encourages everyone to keep a journal. I advocate this too, I've found it to be a good release of feelings, you can just write and say whatever, how you feel it.
~Stevie Nicks, Musicians in Tune by Jenny Boyd, 1992
Personally, I have found the best journals for me are lined, and not wire bound as long as they lie flat when I write. However, there are a ton of varieties out there, lined, unlined, wirebound, "book" bound, blank pages every other page with lines on the other pages, art journals, you name it.
In my own journals, and I'm sure anyone else in the world who keeps one, I write on the first page a little message to anyone who happens upon it and starts reading. My current journal says this:
"Hey you, yes you reading this, unless your name is ___________________, or the previously mentioned girl is dead, you had better shut this journal right this instant. Fail to do so and you will have to face the Three Birds Of Rhiannon and dude, they're mean unless you know how to handle them. (And I'll bet you don't even know who Rhiannon is. So with that said, if you're still reading this you had better have the proper ID on you or I'm dead. Darn it! I'm not dead, so stop reading!"
Other threats I have used are the Wicked Witch of the West, the Cookie Monster, an Oompa Loompa, a spastic chicken, aliens, Lindsey Buckingham's afro... you get the idea.
I have a good collection of journals that are just waiting to be written in, a selection of which I have scanned so you can see some of the more "Stevie"ish journals out there. I have heard that at one point she had one with a crescent moon on it, but I can't verify this. In addition to these pre-designed ones, there are blank covers on which if you are artsy, you can decorate however your wild heart desires.
